beware of snakes

one day, about 10 years ago,
my friends and i decided to visit
the nature reserve nearby.
walking back to the parking lot after
we had our fill of the outdoors, i see a
long slithery thing dart out in front of
my friend. i grabbed her arm and
yanked her back as the snake crossed
the pavement and disappeared into the
grass on the other side of the trail. too
seconds too late and she would have
had a nice pair of dainty wounds
on her ankles. 

the moment you are not paying attention,
there will be a snake. 
and it will bite you.
